Newborn's name honors West Allis caregivers
Virginia residents Jennifer and Scott Calhoun came to Lake Geneva for what they thought would be a brief visit for a baby shower.
However, it turned into an extended stay when Jennifer went into preterm labor.
"The next thing we knew, Jennifer was hooked up to an IV and we were racing up to West Allis," Scott says.
They were admitted to the Aurora Women's Pavilion at Aurora West Allis Medical Center. Jennifer was 27 weeks pregnant, and the baby was less than 3 pounds.
"We were gearing up to have a preemie," Scott says.
Instead, with bed rest and adept medical care, labor was held off for a day, then another. Each day meant the baby had a better chance to survive.
"It was scary at first," Jennifer says, but the caregivers at the Aurora Women's Pavilion helped ease their anxiety.
Gail Kapke, one of Jennifer's labor and delivery nurses, and Paul Ginkel, her obstetrician, were among those who impressed the Calhouns with their medical expertise and compassionate care.
"From housekeeping to the nurses and Dr. Ginkel, everyone was so kind and informative," Jennifer says. "They made a difficult experience as pleasant as it could be."
Nine weeks after the Calhouns arrived, their little girl was born at 6 pounds, 19 ¼ inches. They named her Katelyn Allis Calhoun in honor of all the caregivers who helped Katelyn arrive on time instead of early, and made their experience such a positive one.
